Why RAGE Doesn't Have Deathmatch

Deathmatch is considered a standard multiplayer mode for shooters, especially games from id Software. However, id won't be including deathmatch in their upcoming game RAGE. How come?
"We invented deathmatch, but when we looked at Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein and now Rage, we didn't want to follow the same formula that we have done for the past 20 years," id Software creative director Tim Willits told OXM UK. "So we wanted to make both the single player experience and the multiplayer experience of Rage stand on its own two feet, and be different from our other titles."

RAGE features two multiplayer modes. In Combat Rally, up to six players face off in a free-for-all arena with vehicles. Players collect rally points and try to steal their opponents' points by killing them. Legends of the Wasteland mode, meanwhile, is a collection of two-player co-op missions.

"You're right there's a massive appetite for [standard competitive multiplayer]," said Willits. "But it's like McDonalds. There's a McDonalds on every street corner, and I love McDonalds, but I don't want to eat McDonalds every day. Sometimes you need to have steak."

RAGE will be released on October 4th in North America and on the 7th in Europe.
