Recently some Xbox Live subscribers have received invitations to the test flight of the Xbox Live Rewards program. Xbox Live Rewards allows Xbox 360 owners to earn Microsoft Points through online activity.
You earn MS Points by either renewing your Xbox Live Gold subscription, subscribing to Netflix, purchasing content in Xbox Live Marketplace, or filling out surveys.
Microsoft has released a >chart that explains the exact rewards doled out for each activity. Seems like it'll take awhile to accrue enough points to buy anything "big" on Live but, hey, I'm not going to turn down free points.
The test promotion is currently only in the US and is expected to last for six months. If you're invited to participate, you'll have to wait until three months have passed before spending whatever points you've saved up. You'll be updated on your earnings through weekly emails.
