It looks like Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona is back for more. Better yet, he's re-teaming with The Orphanage producer Guillermo del Toro to work on the thriller Hater.
The film is based on a David Moody novel, which centers on some rather disturbing occurrences. Imagine that anyone around you could snap into a homicidal rage at any given moment, possibly directed towards you. You could even become a vicious killer yourself. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from or what race you are. You can’t trust anyone around you or even yourself. Yes, I know. It sounds an awful lot like The Happening, but where this plot differs is in the fact that people will not be killing themselves, rather being killed by others. Bayonne told Variety, “I like the idea of a movie that talks about the state of fear we live in nowadays.” Sounds good to me, but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that these murders won’t make me laugh, as did the ones in The Happening. Maybe it’ll be a little Dawn of the Dead-esque? Hater will be under Universal’s watchful eye backed by writer Glen Mazzara. It’s a good thing there are so many solid names attached to this film because most of the members have quite the to-do list. Del Toro, for instance, was originally asked to direct the film, but with double doses of The Hobbit that would be impossible. Meanwhile Mazzara is busy writing away for the new television series Crash. Bayona’s schedule however, appears to be wide open. This will be his English-language debut, so the pressure is on.
