Narnia And Heroes Stars In Star Trek The script for Star Trek XI still isn’t done, but that isn’t slowing down the casting rumors. The latest comes from another one of those unreliable UK publications, The Sunday Mail. They say 28-year-old Scottish actor James McAvoy has been offered the role of Scotty in Trek XI.

If you’re wondering who he is, you saw him in The Chronicles of Narnia as the behoofed Mr. Tumnus. He’s also gotten great reviews for his part in the Oscar nominated film The Last King of Scotland. He’s done everything from Macbeth to the made-for-TV miniseries ‘Children of Dune’ where he played Leto Atreides II. The guy is a great actor, he’s already played some major geek roles in major geek movies, and he’d be a brilliant fit as Scotty. If there’s a drawback to him, it’s that he won’t have to fake the accent. I’m not sure Scotty will seem right with a real Scottish lilt instead of James Doohan’s over-the-top fake Scottish brogue.

It’s hard to say how reliable the story is. In the same story, The Sunday Mail talks about Matt Damon as if he’s been confirmed as Captain Kirk, when that’s almost certainly not the case. Damon himself is on record as saying they haven’t even talked about it. Yet they say Paramount thinks McAvoy “could form a brilliant double act with Matt.” Well he could, but Matt has already told us that he hasn’t even been asked.

Meanwhile in slightly more minor Star Trek casting news, the guys over at TrekMovie caught ‘Heroes’ actor Greg Grunberg went on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week. Apparently Grunberg is good friends with Abrams, and he told Jimmy Abrams may force him to be on the film. He later spoke to RT and said regarding Trek XI and Abrams, “He's finalizing the script right now so I just talked to him today and he said, 'I'll send it to you as soon as it’s done' so hopefully it'll be very soon.” Will his be a big part, or just a cameo? Grunberg has already been in a lot of other Abrams project. He had a cameo in Mission: Impossible III and ‘Lost’ fans might remember him as the quickly devoured airplane pilot in the first episode of the show. Grunberg doesn’t know what he’ll do in the film, but says, “I’d love to be a Vulcan, it'd be great. That would be incredible. I don't want to sit through too much makeup though. That's the one thing I'm worried about but we'll see.”
