AFI Dallas wrapped up Thursday night and handed out awards aplenty. I was there for one of the very last screenings, the Quentin Tarantino powered documentary Not Quite Hollywood about Australia’s grindhouse filmmaking. Completely interesting, but I think I’m starting to get a little tired of listening to QT extol the virtues of shitty movies. We get it dude, shitty movies rock. Look for more scintillating commentary on that from me tomorrow.
In the meantime, here’s a full list of the movies the AFI Dallas International Film Festival felt like recognizing. I’m not surprised Skin won the audience award. Not because it was particularly good, but because the audience I saw it with had an almost manic, awestruck, reaction to the material. I don’t get it, but apparently everyone in there but me loved it. Here’s the list of winners:
THE $25,000 TARGET FILMMAKER AWARD FOR BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE Prom Night in Mississippi
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE St. Nick
THE $10,000 CURRENT ENERGY FILMMAKER AWARD Crude
BEST SHORT FILM, STUDENT SHORT AND ANIMATED SHORT Princess Margaret Blvd., Hug, Chicken Cowboy
