BAFTA Winners

By Stuart Wood: 2006-02-20 00:00:00
The British Academy of Film and Television presented their awards last night. For those not in the know, the BAFTAs are the very proper, polite and civilised British answer to the Oscars.

In a very surprising turn out, many of the British nominees found themselves snubbed in favor of their American rivals and in less surprising news the big winner of the night was Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, collecting four awards in total.

Other winners for the evening were Memoirs of a Geisha with three technical awards and Crash and Walk the Line which both collected two awards each.

Philip Seymour Hoffman walked away with the Best Actor award, probably explaining the growing ill-will from Heath Ledger towards Jake Gyllenhaal who collected Best Supporting for his work on Brokeback Mountain.

The only notable winners from the UK for the night were Wallace and Gromit and Joe Wright for Pride and Prejudice.

Will these awards reflect the upcoming Oscars? More than likely, it's safe to say we're seeing a consistant trend in award giving this year.
