I honestly think the sequel for Batman Begins will end up being the most rumored movie of 2006. We’re only a couple of weeks into the year and already the rumors are flowing steadily. For this bunch we go to Moviehole who straight off admits these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, which means I should probably leave them be. Still, when did I ever claim any sort of journalistic integrity. At least I’m telling you where the rumor came from, unlike some sites out there.
The Moviehole anonymous scooper says the following about a potential femme fatale character in the sequel: “This is the first screen appearance for this character in the Batman films and she has a very close connection with a major character in Nolan’s first Batman movie. She will be out for revenge against Bruce Wayne and Gotham in a major way.“ It’s pretty clear who is being talked about here. Ra’s Al Ghul, who was the major villain in the first film has a daughter in the Batman mythos: Talia. That makes sense. Obviously she’d be upset over Batman and her father’s feud.
The source continues: “As of who the studio is looking at for this role, let’s just say that she is nominated for a SAG, a Golden Globe and is on her way to an Oscar nomination as well. She is also in fact five months pregnant and will be in tip top fighting shape once production begins to roll early next year but not before she throws a few coins in a fountain.” Again, that’s a fairly evident hit. Rachel Weisz is pregnant, expecting to get some Oscar attention for her role in The Constant Gardener and stars in The Fountain later this year. She’s not who I’d pick outright for the role, but is definitely an actress I’d like to see in the franchise.
What about the character actually set up by the first movie to appear in the sequel: the Joker? “As you know, there are many actors who want the chance to do this character (The most requested Batman character next to Batman himself.) The studio is eyeing a major, major actor and Christopher Nolan himself is said to be just as excited as they are in nabbing him for the role. Who is he? Let’s just say that he has a major film coming out this summer and it’s a sequel to one of his biggest hits. In fact, his performance in the first movie was nominated for an Oscar. YES, they are looking at HIM if he is available for the role and rumor is that he might be interested depending on the script, which is being written right now.” Hmmm… major summer film, sequel to an Oscar nominated role… Luke Wilson just doesn’t strike me as the Joker type.
Yes, I know, Johnny Depp reprises his Oscar nominated role as Captain Jack Sparrow this summer, and I know Depp’s name was tossed around for the first film as well. I’m still going with Wilson as my interpretation, if for no other reason then to have the right to say “I told you so” if Depp isn’t the choice, although I hope he is. See, that way I win either way – journalistic integrity be damned.
