Beyonce To Star In And Direct Documentary About Her Life
Since giving birth to baby Blue Ivy, Beyoncé Knowles has been bouncing back fast to maintain her spot at the top of music stardom. She's always in the spotlight, whether it be for her accomplishments as a singer-songwriter like her latest top-selling album 4, her daring and spectacular fashion sense, or even the odd film role like her upcoming part in the animated adventure Epic. But now Beyoncé is looking to branch out further, while keeping the spotlight firmly planted on herself.
Blame the wave of pop concert docs for the likes of Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, the Jonas Brothers and the Glee cast, but Beyoncé is currently looking to make a self-focused documentary of her own. She and her agents are currently shopping the project to studios, promising it would be a blend of her chart-topping music and a personal portrait, revealed through concert footage and in-depth interviews. Their pitch is said to include 20 minutes of footage, though what that entails is unknown. Surprisingly, the LA Times reports she would not only be the doc's subject but also its director.
The film would not be Beyoncé's first exposure to the documentary format, as she was recently the subject of the MTV "mini-documentary" Beyoncé: Year of 4, which followed her return to the recording studio for her latest hit album. However, being the center of a doc and its director are two very different things. While all of the pop docs of late have offered glowing portraits of the stars at their center, there was at least an established director behind them who knew how to shape hours and hours of footage into a fluid narrative. Beyoncé's assumption that she can do the same seems the product of hubris. It's a major leap to make.
I have no doubt she'd sparkle as a subject, but it's difficult to imagine her incredible talents will also extend to being able to cull together a compelling look at her own life within the tricky medium of documentary. Of course, with her being such a hot and beloved star, some studio or another seems certain to sign on. Let's just hope they push for Sasha Fierce to allow someone else to take the reins, so she can focus on what she does best.
