It’ll be months before we even know for certain whether a third Christopher Nolan Batman movie will happen, and we will be spending those next few months together, you and I, bludgeoning ourselves to death with endless amounts of speculation, fake rumors, and outright lies. Right now the trend in Dark Knight sequel rumoring seems to be the media’s insistence in turning Batman 3 into an episode of the Golden Girls. For instance there was the utterly stupid rumor that Cher might play Catwoman… and now here we are talking about Sly Stallone playing Batman.
At least this particular geriatric casting discussion isn’t some sort of actual rumor, just the wishful thinking of a crazy old man. That crazy old man is named Frank Miller, famous for authoring one of the best comics ever written (also called “The Dark Knight Return”, no relation), in which Batman is kind of an old fogey. Miller, who as far as we know has absolutely nothing to do with the Batman movie franchise but still carries a lot of weight in the Batman universe, spoke to the LA Times and told them he wants Stallone playing Batman. Says Miller, “I loved Rocky Balboa.'This wounded warrior, that's what Batman is in Dark Knight Returns.”
The key of course to having someone like Stallone play the character would be in putting Miller’s version of the comic up on screen, a version which really has nothing to do with the current franchise, beyond a few tonal similarities. If someone were to do that though, I guess I could see Stallone playing old Batman, for whatever that’s worth. Probably nothing, like this story.
