Grimm Fate What happened to The Brothers Grimm? That’s the question I asked a few weeks ago when we posted some of the first info on Terry Gilliam’s next project, Tideland. Well, FilmRot.com via the Gilliam fansite Dreams has provided the answer.
In an interview with Gilliam about Tideland, someone finally had the wherewithal to ask him what happened to that Grimm movie, since he seems to be so busy working on something else. Gilliam’s response? “The current status of Grimm is still a little bit unclear. Up until a few days ago we thought we had to deliver the film for financial reasons by the end of March next year. But now I've just been told I have to deliver the film sometime in June.” For me, this is actually somewhat confusing since I would have thought by now the film would be complete. If it isn’t, how is he going to get it done if he’s already busy working on something else? More importantly, what the heck is taking so long? Gilliam responds, ”…at the moment over here Lesley Walker, who's also editing Tideland, and I have been working on the weekends on Grimm.” So apparently The Brothers Grimm is nothing more than a weekend hobby for him at this point… which perhaps explains why so many of his films end up in a flaming ball of disaster. It’s not even just editing he has left to do, he’s still working on a few shots. ”We've still got quite a few shots that aren't finalised on Grimm cgi-wise. In the end there's been about 750 cgi shots, and there's about 50 that aren't finished yet. And right now there's a lot of going round in circles about how much is left financially and the budget to pay for these things and how many shots are critical. So there's a lot of negotiations going on.” That makes it sound like he’s basically run out of money. I wonder if he had a documentary film crew working on this one, a Lost in La Grimm may be the only way we’ll ever see anything of the film at this rate. He’s not sounding very positive is he?
