The Hitchcock biopic Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho has been in the works for several years now, but it looks like the project is finally filling out its cast and inching closer to theaters. Anthony Hopkins will be playing the famous director, and now they've attracted an actress of equal caliber to play the female lead: THR says that the ever-foxy Dame Helen Mirren is in talks to take on the role of Alma Reville, Hitchcock's wife.

The biopic is based on the book by Stephen Rebello and screenwriter John McLaughlin wrote the adaptation, which landed on the Black List back in 2007. Sasha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) is directing. While Mirren hasn't signed on the dotted line, the project is gaining steam thanks to a move from Paramount over to Fox Searchlight. Assuming it all comes together, the movie could begin shooting in April 2012.

As the title suggests, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho looks at the period of Hitchcock's life when he was engaged in making what would become arguably his most iconic film. While Psycho is an inarguable classic now, at the time it was considered a huge risk for a respected director to make a horror movie. Paramount execs wouldn't give Hitchcock the budget he insisted on, so the director wound up financing it himself and deferring his fee in exchange for a partial ownership of the film negative. I guess we know who got the last laugh out of that deal.

I read a copy of the Black List-nominated script a few years back and it was a fascinating and funny look at the director who became almost as much an icon as a director. It looks like several writers have worked on the script since then, including Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story). This is one I'm hoping comes together soon.
