The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Adds Amanda Plummer As Wiress

With still no official information about who's playing either Finnick or Johanna Mason (though Jena Malone is your likely bet for the latter), we're getting more information about the casting for some of the smaller characters in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Last week Philip Seymour Hoffman was officially confirmed as Head Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee, and now Lionsgate has announced that Amanda Plummer, the star of Pulp Fiction and The Fisher King, will play District 3 tribute Wiress.

It's hard to know how to explain her role in the film without getting into what might be spoilers for Catching Fire, but suffice it to say Wiress plays a major role in the 75th Hunger Games, which are called the Quarter Quell and have a different, special format than most games. You might remember from The Hunger Games that the tributes are teenagers, and you're not wrong, but for the Quarter Quell former tributes play an important role, which is how our heroine Katniss, her maybe-boyfriend Peeta and their mentor Haymitch get involved as well. The surprises are best left to be discovered for yourself, but Wiress is a small but important role, and Plummer will also face the challenge of playing a character who is almost completely nonverbal.

Now, let's just get around to casting Johanna and Finnick and maybe we can finally get started on this thing. Catching Fire is set to start production this fall, with a release date of November 22, 2013.
