Marvel's Doctor Strange Will Try To Fit Into This Movie Genre

While Marvel’s Doctor Strange has only just begun to film, it’s already one of the more anticipated films within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Doctor Strange inhabits a realm unlike any other character we’ve seen on screen thus far, making this movie something new for a studio who’ve made over a dozen films. So what sort of movie can we expect when Doctor Strange hits screens next year? It’s Marvel so you can be confident they’ll bring the action but they won’t be skimping on the strange either.

The upcoming DVD set for Marvel’s Phase 2 includes a brief look at Doctor Strange. According to director Scott Derrickson, the movie he is creating is something of a new genre we were not previously familiar with.

What you can expect from this Doctor Strange movie is a mind-trip action film.

Producer Stephen Broussard doubles down on this idea, focusing on the unique visuals that the character will explore in the movie. At the same time the "real world" has to jive with everything we’ve seen before in the MCU so the movie will have to balance itself between these two extremes. Kevin Feige says that the primary goal of the movie will be to get otherworldly aspects of the film on screen within the confines of the existing world.

Mind-trip action movie makes it sound like the audience will think they’re on drugs the whole time. This is the perfect metaphor, as it has been used before to describe the world that Doctor Strange inhabits. As the "master of the mystic arts," Doctor Strange traditionally is able to step through the fabric of reality, traveling to other realms that do not confine themselves to the rules of our reality. While the ideas of magic have been touched on in previous Marvel films, this will be the MCU’s first deep dive into a character who takes influence from major world religions as well as the occult. The reality of the MCU has been a fairly consistent place thus far. While superpowers and aliens exist, it still resembles our world. Doctor Strange will need to create things that not only have humans never seen, but potentially things that we don’t even understand.

The upcoming film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Doctor Strange and co-stars Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tilda Swinton. It looks like Marvel will not be pulling any punches in this one, creating a world just as odd and surreal as the comics that came before it. Are you excited for Marvel's first "mind-trip action movie?"
