Oscar Results - Updated Live! It’s Academy Awards night, which means we’ve already all piled in to Oscar Chat for our annual chat thing. For those of you not inside Oscar Chat 4 with us, I’ll be updating this news page LIVE with winners and semi-interesting commentary throughout the night as the Academy Awards happen. Keep refreshing this page to get your Oscar results! When there’s a winner, it’ll be noted in bold. When I have something to say, it will be noted in notes.
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland Leonardo DiCaprio - The Aviator Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby Jamie Foxx - Ray The inevitable. ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE Alan Alda - The Aviator Thomas Haden Church - Sideways Jamie Foxx - Collateral Morgan Freeman - Million Dollar Baby Clive Owen - Closer Alan Alda looks so... happy sitting in his seat. Like he'll be happy either way. Very cool guy. Great Jamie scene showed too. I so don't get the Morgan Freeman nod. At least he wasn't playing a detective opposite a white woman. This time a boxing trainer opposite a white woman. Wow, Morgan won though! Never saw that coming. Never! ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE Annette Bening - Being Julia Catalina Sandino Moreno - Maria Full of Grace Imelda Staunton - Vera Drake Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Well there goes my pick. But she's been promoting herself around enough. I guess it should have been obvious. If only she'd turned that Clint Eastwood thank you into a Clint Howard thank you. ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE Cate Blanchett - The Aviator Laura Linney - Kinsey Virginia Madsen - Sideways Sophie Okonedo - Hotel Rwanda Natalie Portman - Closer Madsen only seemed great because she was with the snubbed Giamatti. Damned shame. I really wanted Cate to win this one. Dismissing her has an impression was silly. If you're going to level that at anyone level it at Jamie in Ray, since impressions have been his comedy bread and butter in the past. The Oscars agreed. Really great. She deserves it! She looks luminous up there. Her look is almost a Hepburn tribute itself. Really nice speech. Lot of thanking Hepburn, as it should be. Well done Cate. ANIMATED FEATURE FILM The Incredibles Shark Tale Shrek 2 This had to be Incredibles. The others didn't even deserve to be mentioned with it. Especially Shark Tale, I mean, come on. So great to see Brad Bird get recognized. Seems like a really nice guy up there. Looks like a computer nerd. I identify with the IT nerd. Go Brad! DIRECTING Martin Scorsese - The Aviator Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby Taylor Hackford - Ray Alexander Payne - Sideways Mike Leigh - Vera Drake Shocking. Wow. No way did I think Scorsese could lose this. Damn shame. Scorsese is NEVER going to get an Oscar at this rate. Goddamn. This one hurts. Really hurts. BEST PICTURE The Aviator Finding Neverland Million Dollar Baby Ray Sideways Fockers promoting is not appropriate when presenting Best Picture Ms. Streisand. MDB winning this was a given after Clint ripped the Oscar from Marty's cold dead hands. No one even heard of this flick until a couple of months ago, but the critical rah rah from folks like Roger Ebert pushed it to the top of the heap. Clint looks awfully young all the sudden. WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY) Before Sunset Finding Neverland Million Dollar Baby The Motorcycle Diaries Sideways No surprise here. Very dapper speech from Taylor though. Isn't looking like there'll be much else for Sideways but this. WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY) The Aviator Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Hotel Rwanda The Incredibles Vera Drake Token award for Eternal Sunshine. Would have been nice to see an ANIMATED film win this. That would have been momentus. This is just nice. It's getting nothing else. MUSIC (SCORE) Finding Neverland Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events The Passion of the Christ The Village Didn't see the Finding Neverland win coming. Was hoping for Potter (John Williams is back... again!), but this is a nice pick too. MUSIC (SONG) "Accidentally In Love" - Shrek 2 "Al Otro Lado Del Río" - The Motorcycle Diaries "Believe" - The Polar Express "Learn To Be Lonely" - The Phantom of the Opera "Look To Your Path (Vois Sur Ton Chemin)" - The Chorus First spanish language song ever nominated wins! Can't hate that. Beautiful song, even if Antonio Banderas sang it. DOCUMENTARY FEATURE Born into Brothels The Story of the Weeping Camel Super Size Me Tupac: Ressurection Twist of Faith I only saw Super Size Me... meh. The kids are watching Calcuatt. Nice. DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT Autism is a World The children of Leningradsky Hardwood Mighty Times: The Children's March Sister Rose's Passion Cut this one, give me some tech awards. Natalie Portman was wearing curtains when she presented it. Good for her. No fancy designer, just drapes. SHORT FILM (ANIMATED) Birthday Boy Gopher Broke Guard Dog Lorenzo Ryan Ryan's has a great buffet. SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION) Everything in this Country Must Little Terrorist 7:35 in the Morning Two Cars, One Night Wasp This award should be cut, stick it with the tech nerd awards hosted by Scarlett. FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM As it is in Heaven The Chorus Downfall The Sea Inside Yesterday I don't get this movie. It seemed wrong headed. Not because I have a problem with euthanasia, but because the film never made a good case for the guy needing it. ART DIRECTION The Aviator Finding Neverland Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events The Phantom of the Opera A Very Long Engagement Aviator wins!!! First award of the night. At least they got to it fast. Not bad. Glad it wasn't Phantom. CINEMATOGRAPHY The Aviator House of Flying Daggers The Passion of the Christ The Phantom of the Opera A Very Long Engagement Passion had no chance at this if it couldn't win the makeup award. Aviator deserves it for the aerial stuff alone. COSTUME DESIGN The Aviator Finding Neverland Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events Ray Troy Edna Mole presented the award with Pierce Brosnan! Maybe she made his tux. Aviator seems to be on track with tech awards. I hope that isn't all it gets. FILM EDITING The Aviator Collateral Finding Neverland Million Dollar Baby Ray Another Aviator win. Really didn't expect such a sweep. In this case, Collateral might have been nice to see. Anything but Ray. MAKEUP Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events The Passion of the Christ The Sea Inside I don't know why Sea Inside was nominated, but Passion would have been a nice winner. Still, it went to Lemony, which I guess isn't a bad choice. Standard choice, but good one. SOUND EDITING The Incredibles The Polar Express Spider-Man 2 YES! They so deserve this. Granted, they deserve a lot of awards, but the noms weren't there. This one though... no comparison. So deserved. SOUND MIXING The Aviator The Incredibles The Polar Express Ray Spider-Man 2 Incredibles ROBBED. Yes, Ray had nice music, but Incredibles had the best sound mixing I've ever heard, no contest. VISUAL EFFECTS Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban I, Robot Spider-Man 2 Spidey wins... and Jake presented it, which is sort of weird since he was nearly Spider-Man himself. |
