Rob Cohen Says The Third xXx Movie Is Dormant

Rob Cohen’s resume includes a couple of installments in two major motion-picture franchises. And while making the press rounds for his next massive franchise-launcher, Alex Cross, Cohen gave updates on both of those previous projects … which he might be returning to if he gets his way.

Coincidentally, Cohen’s fates on both a new xXx and a new Fast and Furious are tied to actor Vin Diesel, who’s integral to both series. So Cohen tells We Got This Covered that while he’d like to do another movie in each of these franchises, he has to wait on Diesel.

"I’d be happy to do it," Cohen says about potentially directing another Furious film. "I mean, it is my baby. No matter what way they twist it, I am still the guy who did the first one and made it what it was. … The first couple sequels though, what I hated about them was that it was just for money, the studio was just milking the cash cow. It’s a miracle they didn’t kill it. If you were to just watch Tokyo Drift, you’d say ‘I never want to see anything related to Fast and Furious again.’"

And yet at the same time Cohen admits to the site that a third xXx movie is “sort of dormant” while the director waits for Diesel to "get his head out of Fast and Furious sequels," so the chances of Cohen tackling either in the near future seem pretty slim. Diesel appears more interested in resurrecting his classic Riddick character than he does in stepping into the snowboard of X Games action hero xXx. And Cohen, after Alex Cross, has pre-production on his Korean War epic 1950, which he hopes to shoot in 2013. Could he find himself involved with one or more of the action series he helped establish? Sure, but probably not any time soon.
