You might have thought the cliffhanger ending of 2011's Insidious was the last you'd hear from the haunted Lambert clan. But after the $1.5 million feature earned both critical praise and an impressive $97 million at the box office, Film District was eager to create a sequel. And director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell were more than happy to oblige. So, the Lamberts are back with Insidious: Chapter 2.

Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, and Barbara Hershey reprise their roles as married couple Renai and Josh Lambert, and Lorraine, Josh's mother-- that's Byrne you see at the beginning of this clip, reliving the terrifying ending of Insidious and setting up the next chapter. And as you can see in the below motion poster, child actors Andrew Astor and Ty Simpkins are also back as the young Lambert boys. But in this second chapter these poltergeist plagued kids not only get a new home and new baby brother, but also new trouble from ghouls who want that baby. What the jaunty but cryptic song "Tiptoe through the Tulips" has to do with anything is beyond me.

Before Film District released the first trailer for Insidious: Chapter 2, they screened it for a batch of bloggers on each coast, following it up with a brief question and answer session with Wan. Along with sharing his own experiences with ghosts, Wan told those assembled that Insidious: Chapter 2 would further uncover Josh's troubling childhood, while exploring astral projection and time travel in the style of a domestic thriller. As he did in the first film, Wan has reportedly grounded his scares in a realistic world, and favored practical effects. Both of which he hopes will be helped by the production's on-location shoots at the notorious Linda Vista Hospital, which has played host to a long list of horror movies and television productions, and has also been the subject of various paranormal investigations.

One thing Wan was eager to make clear to us bloggers at the preview event was that he sees Insidious: Chapter 2 not so much as sequel as a "continuation of the first film"-- which is obviously the idea behind the clip at the top of this post. How is Renai able to trust her husband after the horrors she has seen in the first Insidious? We'll find out when Chapter 2 hits theaters on September 13th (a Friday the 13th). In the meantime, be sure to check out James Wan's latest horror offering The Conjuring, which also stars Patrick Wilson and opens this Friday.
