The folks behind Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho are going seriously overboard with their casting. As though it weren't enough that the production has already brought in Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren to play Hitchcock and his wife, they've brought on two more immensely talented performers to play the actors at the heart of the classic film.

Scarlett Johansson and James D'Arcy have been brought aboard the project to play Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins, according to Variety. The film, which is being directed by Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil), is about how the legendary master of suspense struggled while trying to make what is considered by many to be the greatest horror film of all time. Even more interesting, the trade says that the script, written by John McLaughlin, has been getting comparisons to My Week With Marilyn, and "the role of Janet Leigh could lead to the same awards consideration for Johansson that the Marilyn Monroe role did for Michelle Williams." D'Arcy's role is apparently much smaller than Johansson's but, obviously, still significant. Ivan Reitman, Joe Medjuck and Tom Pollack are attached to produce the film.

The way that Hitchcock treated his actresses is stuff of legend and one can expect that this movie will definitely explore that. There are some truly great and true interactions between Leigh and Hitchcock that would make great fodder for the film, from the first thing that director said to the actress on set ("I hired you because you are an actress! I will only direct you if A: you attempt to take more than your share of the pie, B: you don't take enough, or C: if you are having trouble motivating the necessary timed movement.") to the fact that he would occasionally leave the Mrs. Bates corpse in Leigh's dressing room to see just how scary the doll was. Johansson is a great choice and it will be fascinating to see what she does with the role.

(Note: That image above is from a Hitchcock issue of Vanity Fair in which Johansson dressed up as Grace Kelly from Rear Window. It was Marion Cotillard who posed as Janet Leigh from Psycho, but I at least think I should earn an A for effort)
