ShoWest: Sherlock Holmes Trailer Premiere!

We got a lot of looks at new footage from Warner Bros. movies at this morning's State of the Industry update, but first up I've got to report on the first-ever trailer for Sherlock Holmes, which premiered before the packed house.

Robert Downey Jr. was on hand to introduce the trailer, which focused a lot of on the comedic moments between Holmes and Watson (Jude Law), and the shirtless boxing scenes we've seen still images of already. We also got a little glimpse of Rachel McAdams, who seems to be the type of lady to meet a man, seduce him, then knee him in the groin and leave him tied up to bed. The biggest laugh of the trailer came at the end, when Holmes is tied to the bed and discovered by a very surprised maid.

We didn't get much about the plot, other than that Lord Blackwood is in jail early in the film (or at least early in the trailer) and asks for Holmes by name. Holmes has been assigned to track down Lord Blackwood, and since this appears to be some sort of origin story, he's paired up with Watson to help make it happen. One scene in which the duo is trying to open a locked door seems to set up the relationship-- Holmes is the brainy one, trying to pick the lock, while Watson is willing to just kick the thing down.

Overall the trailer focused a lot more on the comedy than I would have expected, and I still can't figure out any plot motivation for all that focus on the shirtless boxing. The boxing scene also went heavy on the slo-mo, which in a post-Watchmen burnout world, might not be the best of plans. But if it turns out as funny and as quick on its feet as it seemed here, it'll probably make up for it.
