The great Tim Roth has lined up his next project... assuming Inglorious Bastards never happens. He'll star opposite Naomi Watts in the drama Funny Games, for director Michael Haneke.
Variety says the film casts Roth as a father trying to protect his family from two psychos who invade their cabin during a vacation. It sounds like a hillbilly horror thriller, but it's being labeled as a drama. Drama or thriller, Roth versus hillbillies is good.
What's really odd about this project is that if IMDB is to believed, Haneke is remaking his own movie. In 1997 he directed a German movie called Funny Games, with the same plot and a different cast. In that movie two hillbillies take a family hostage and make them play sadistic games with each other, because of course hillbillies do love incest.
Roth was last seen in 2005's Dark Water, so it's about time he got back to work. The next place he'll show up is in the 2007 movie Guilty Pleasures with Hayden Christensen.

The original film did not feature hillbillies. Instead, the villains were two preppy looking 20 somethings - both well-groomed, sporting nice clothes, and carrying a mysteriously suave presence. This made the film ten times scarier than other films with stereotypical "hillbillies." I hope Haneke employs the same approach for his remake.
if this remake follows the 1997 original film in german by the same director michael haneke, the husband role played by tim roth is no protector of his family but a weak chicken-hearted cry-baby coward (versus the hillbillies? no way). it is also a supporting role to the lead role of anna played by naomi watts (susanne lothar in 1997).
