Weekend Box Office - National Treasure

By Scott Gwin: 2007-12-31 00:15:13

This was the first weekend for the movies released last Tuesday on Christmas and the first real opportunity to see how they stack up against each other and the competition. Some performed poorly compared to their Christmas debut while others stepped up their game to move up on the post-holiday chart.

The final weekend of the year showed favor to veteran movies and little love for the newcomers. It's been a year of sequels so it seemed only proper that a sequel be on top as the year heads out. National Treasure : Book of Secrets held on to the number one slot while Alvin and the Chipmunks and I Am Legend swapped spaces in a surprising move that put the furry singers on top of the last man on earth.

Charlie Wilson's War managed not only to hold on to fourth place but made 20% more than it did last weekend. Indie favorite Juno jumped from tenth place to fifth on the wings of a wide release to nearly 1000 theaters, leaving no room for the newcomers in the top five.

Alien vs. Predator - Requiem made a relatively strong showing on Christmas, taking the number three spot with nearly $10 million on the day. However, while the fan boys turned out en masse to usher in the painful sequel, they seem to have abandoned it for the duration of the run. With only $10 million in its first full weekend it fell into the sixth place spot and is well on its way to where it belongs: out of theaters and on the discount shelf at rental stores.

There was a little more love for The Water Horse. After wallowing at the number nine spot on Tuesday with only $2.3 million, it drew in $9.2 million in its first weekend jumping up to seventh place. The Great Debaters took a turn for the worse, dropping from sixth place on Christmas to eleventh place over the weekend. With only $6 million it not only faces the prospect of dying fast and quiet, it also, along with AvP - Requiem and Water Horse, is unlikely to turn a profit.
