The Top 5 Movies Of 2016, According To Google Play

Civil War Google Play

It's definitely safe to say that 2016 has been a solid year for movies. Even in the face of a few blockbuster misfires, we've seen a lot of awesome films hit theaters over the course of the last twelve months. With the year coming to a close, the numbers have started to roll in, and we're really beginning to get a sense of which movies truly resonated with audiences. In fact, Google Play's five most popular films of the year have just been revealed. They are:

DeadpoolStar Wars: The Force AwakensZootopiaCaptain America: Civil WarBatman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice

Google has officially announced the most popular movies of 2016 on Google Play, and it appears that Deadpool has topped the list. Following Deadpool is Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- which technically debuted in theaters in 2015, but became available for home release this year -- followed by Disney's wildly popular (and highly topical) Zootopia. Finally, rounding out the list is a duel between Marvel and DC's respective "vs." movies, with Captain America: Civil War taking the fourth place, while Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice gets the fifth place spot.

The overwhelming popularity of Deadpool is far from surprising. Wade Wilson's first silver screen adventure proved so successful with mainstream audiences when it debuted that it actually managed to become the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. It only makes sense that such an immense degree of popularity would carry over into the film's Google Play release.

As it turns out, The Merc with the Mouth's popularity actually extended far beyond the silver screen. In addition to Deadpool taking the number one spot in the movie section, Google Play also announced that Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe -- one of the most iconic Deadpool graphic novels of all time -- took the number one spot in the Google Play books sections. It even managed to beat out popular literary works like The Girl on the Train, as well as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

However, one look at this list should instantly tell you who the real winner of 2016 is: Disney. Despite the fact that 20th Century Fox's Deadpool garnered the number one spot in terms of raw popularity, three out of five of Google Play's most popular films (The Force Awakens, Zootopia and Civil War) were produced by Disney this year. With Disney Animation, Marvel and Lucasfilm slated to release several films over the course of the next twelve months, it's entirely likely that Google Play's 2017 rankings could look similar to this year's when all is said and done. We will just have to wait and see.

We will bring you all of the latest and greatest news concerning the performances of 2016's best movies as new information becomes available to us. Stay tuned for more awesome details!
