The best thing about awards shows is not watching the biggest music acts in the world perform their biggest hits. With an unfamiliar stage and a need to play to the camera, it’s really hard for these bands/ solo artists/ groups to deliver anything approaching quality.
Judging by the crazy amount of news coverage of Miley’s outlandish performance and the ‘N Sync reunion, it’s easy to see why network executives like giving so much emphasis to the performances. People clearly do tune in to see how crazy Lady Gaga might get or how Katy Perry might sound singing “Roar” live for the first time. Those moments are what the show advertises, and they’re how asses are put in the seats for the following year.
A picture's worth a thousand words, or so they say. But those words may end up getting shuffled up a bit sometimes, as was the case for the Smith family photo that was circulating after last night's MTV Video Music Awards. The image showed Will Smith and his kids in seeming shock or discomfort as they reportedly watched Miley Cyrus work the stage in a skimpy outfit during her performance with Robin Thicke.
Sure Justin, it's true that the Internet screamed like a One Direction concert the minute rumors of an 'N Sync concert first broke. But did you have to make it sound like such a threat at the VMAs last night? I wondered for a while if Justin would be too self-conscious about his super-smooth current image to allow a reunion with 'N Sync to happen on live TV, and the rumors I heard say the reunion wasn't a guarantee until the very last minute over the weekend
98 Degrees, The Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block did it and took the act on tour. Destiny's Child did it as part of one of the best Super Bowl halftime performances in recent memory. The Spice Girls did at the damn Olympics. Reuniting the all-girl or all-guy singing group that got you your start is all the rage these days, so it shouldn't come as that much of a surprise that 'N Sync is rumored to be jumping on the tren
MTV has changed a lot over the years, moving from a TV station that mostly played music videos to a TV station that airs more than its fair share of wild reality content, including stuff like Teen Mom and the now-defunct Buckwild. With the nature of MTV changing, the network felt it was time for the VMAs iconic Moonman statue to change, too—especially since the VMAs are headed back to Brooklyn this year
Typically, the MTV Video Music Awards broadcast from Los Angeles or Manhattan, with the occasional trip to other exciting cities like Vegas or Miami during certain years. This year, the iconic Moonman is Brooklyn bound! MTV celebrated the announcement of their plans to celebrate the MTV Movie Awards' 30th anniversary in Brooklyn by sharing photos of the statue's journey from Los Angeles to the East Coast.
Taylor Swift's known for a the country charm she brings to many of her songs, but her new single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is pretty much all pop. And given its #1 spot on iTunes download list, it was understandably one of the more anticipated performances during MTV's Video Music Awards. At the very least, MTV saved Swift for last and hyped it up throughout the ceremony. Check out the video ahead.
Rihanna left the MTV Video Music Awards a big winner tonight thanks to her Moon Man for “We Found Love”, but even if she didn’t wind up collecting a statue, she likely would have had fans talking tomorrow thanks to the utterly bizarre performance she offered up. Clad in red and planted atop a giant chair, the pop star gyrated her way through a rendition of “Cockiness” before electrifying the crowd by busting into “We Found Love”.
Wiz Khalifa spent the past month shouting at anyone who would listen that the pregnancy rumors concerning his fiancée Amber Rose were bogus. Turns out he was lying. The rapper and his soon-to-be wife hit up the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards a few minutes ago, and the second she stepped out of the limo, it was clear the pair were ready to finally put their future on record.
The MTV Video Music Awards might not be as classy or well thought of as other ceremonies, but in a way, that’s part of the event’s charm. The difference between winning and losing isn’t enough to alter careers or create grudges; so, everyone casually shows up and has an extremely good time. Considering how seriously many performers take themselves, that’s most assuredly a good thing, and it makes for interesting television.
You'd think that after showing up at last year's awards wearing a dress made out of meat Gaga wouldn't possibly be able to top herself, but that'd be underestimating her skills of showmanship. Gaga took the stage dressed as her male alter ego, Joe Calderone, then went on to perform "You and I" completely in male drag. It's something you have to see to believe-- and lucky for you, the video is right here embedded below
See how Kanye and Jay-Z barely even reacted? With almost bemused curiosity, they turned around, surveyed the situation and keep on going, much to the delight of the sold out crowd. I imagine many viewers at home didn't even realize what happened. Besides, Jay-Z has bigger things to worry about now that he's about to be a father.
The only thing more mesmerizing than a power couple is a power baby. So, world, brace yourselves for a new privileged and potentially awesome child. Beyonce Knowles used the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet earlier tonight to flaunt the fact that she and husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child
