One Track Sunday: Bowerbirds Sing For A Boy And A Fish

Bowerbirds are a favorite concert band of mine, mostly for the easy rapport the band holds together onstage and for the relative ease of the music, which is great for a small venue in the middle of Indiana. The band’s latest music video endeavor, “Tuck the Darkness In” is a great example of what Bowerbirds can achieve as a band, standing out as much for its harmonic, orchestral music as for its lovely little video tale of a young boy and his relationship to fish.

“Tuck the Darkess In,” the opening track off of this month’s The Clearing, begins with a boy fishing with his father. On the drive home, he can’t help staring at the cooler where the unlucky fish lies. Soon, his interest in the fish grows and he cannot stop thinking about it. We get to watch the boy grapple with his feelings until the video reaches a conclusion that entirely avoids reality but is a satisfying surprise. It sounds strange, but it is really touching, I promise.
