American Idol - Season 7
Premieres: Tuesday, January 15th at 8:00 p.m. EST
Creator(s): Simon Fuller
Starring: Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul
American Idol is a talent competition that gives amateur singers the chance to go pro by competing against each other by singing pop-songs. Each week, the contestants perform and America votes. The person with the lowest amount of votes is sent home.
Before the actual competition episodes begin airing, the audition episodes air. Generally, this involves weeks of extra-long episodes in which we get to see the best of and worst of the auditioners as they stand before Randy, Simon and Paula and hope that their vocal abilities are enough to get them through to the next round.
Over the last couple of seasons I’ve actually started to lose interest in American Idol. Perhaps it’s the semi-predictability that comes with a show like this or because there were only three contestants I really felt like rooting for last season (Jordin, Blake and Melinda) but it just hasn’t been doing it for me as much as it used to.
This year, I feel a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the series. I’m thinking a good portion of my excitement is due to the strike. The writers strike has pretty much destroyed what’s left of this season’s TV. Shows are airing new episodes and then getting cut-off mid-season and replaced by reruns, game shows and reality TV. Amercan Idol, being unscripted, has been virtually untouched by the strike and in that sense, I feel like its one of the only TV shows that I’ve regularly watched in the past that I can still watch and know that regardless of whether or not the strike ends soon, Idol will go on.
