Alex Trebek Could Leave Jeopardy In Two Years
Jeopardy without Alex Trebek? It’s practically unthinkable, but the 71-year-old host is about ready to give retirement some serious thought. He’s considering ending his run on the show soon; but apparently friends are urging him to stick it out and hit the 30-year mark as host of the show – that’s another two years from now.
Trebek was the “Power Player of the Week” on Fox News this weekend, and among the items up for discussion were his thoughts on retirement. He admits he’s “torn” on leaving the show. After 28 years as the host, it has to be hard to think about leaving, but it’s bound to happen sooner or later. Although he wasn’t definitive, it does sound like retirement in the next few years is a serious consideration. As for retirement plans, it sounds like he might increase his work with charity organization World Vision.
“A lot of people have been telling me, Alex, you've got to go for at least 30. At least do two more. So that has a nice ring to it. Put in your 30 and go help people.”
Trebek also coyly hinted that perhaps celebrity editions of the show were in fact “dumbed down”, responding to the question with a gesture hinting he was pleading the 5th. He says he usually knows the answer to about 2/3 of the Jeopardy questions, but he’s not quite as quick on the draw as he used to be. That’s still a lot better than I can do.
So it looks like 2 years from now, we could be seeing a new host handing out the answers and seeking the questions on the Jeopardy stage. It’s hard to imagine the show without him, or who might replace him.
