Following up on her starring role in USA's limited drama series Political Animals and a recurring role as Schmidt's boss and bedmate on New Girl, Watchmen's Carla Gugino has signed on for the female lead in David Shore's drama Doubt. News of her casting follows word that actor Steve Coogan has landed the starring role in the ABC pilot.

Doubt will star Coogan as Vincent, a charming low-rent attorney whose street smarts from his days as a cop come in handy when trying to work the system to help his clients. On the personal side, Vincent's battling his own demons and attempting to win over his ex-wife Linda. Gugino will play that role. Deadline describes Gugino's character, Linda, as "a no-nonsense ADA who has little patience for courtroom antics, especially when it comes to her impulsive ex-husband." She also sometimes has sex with Vincent, which probably complicates (or intensifies) the relationship even further, considering they're split up… technically.

As Deadline notes, Doubt would put Gugino back on ABC, the network that played host to the 2003 series Karen Sisco. Her more recent small screen credits include Entourage, Californication, and as mentioned, Political Animals and New Girl. On the big screen, she's starred in Watchmen, Sin City, Spy Kids, and because I can't not mention two of my favorite guilty-pleasure movies, Son in Law and Troop Beverly Hills. Picturing Gugino as someone beautiful, capable and direct isn't difficult, but how will her chemistry be with Coogan? That could be the very thing to make or break this project, which could be the next House for series creator David Shore, if it makes it onto ABC's 2013-2014 roster.
