Laguna Beach: Under Pressure

Cami feels like everyone’s breaking up these days and when Cami has a feeling it usually becomes (that is if it isn’t already) an indisputable piece of Laguna truth. Cami-Kyndra shopping trash-talk scenes, which have consistently been the highlight of each of this season’s episodes, are proof that these girls can, while very much a part of the catty world of LB themselves, make some pretty valid (albeit obvious) insights about it, like that, um, no relationship has ever lasted in Laguna Beach.

Alex’s decidedly half-hearted attitude toward a committed relationship with Rocky became very apparent in some off-screen conversation that planted some deadly seeds of doubt in Rocky’s delusional head. Acknowledging her faults and insisting that she too does not want to be metaphorically married, Rocky bought a totally unconvincing reconciliatory hug from Alex on the beach. Rocky claimed to understand the pressure she was putting on Alex and promised she would back off and let him hang out with his guy friends whenever he wants to. She later told Tessa that Alex had been feeling pressure from every part of his life, acknowledging that he did have some existence outside of the suffocating hold of Rocky (though these other sources of pressure were never actually revealed).

There must not be many overpriced lunch places in Laguna under contract with the LB producers because Alex and friend bumped into Lexie and friend at some street-side restaurant and soon conveniently became table neighbors. Bridging the not-so-prodigious junior-senior age gap, Alex made it his business to acquaint himself with Lexie and friend, who, after leaving their quarter-eaten salads, commented on Alex’s looks. Alex, aware of the impending dissolution of his relationship with Rocky, was already on the rebound.

Bonfires on cold nights are certainly not a good idea for those bony Laguna girls who are forced to sport baggy sweatshirts and comfy sweatpants, but they are perfect for producers looking to unify fragmented cast members and gauge their opinions of key couplings. Chase wasn’t even sure if Rocky and Alex were still together and Cami, Kyndra & Co. were just waiting to watch a juicy breakup. The bitches got what they wanted as Rocky and Tessa were completely shunned by their boyfriends. Rocky finally got the admission that had been imminent for the past three weeks (that is, that Alex was not happy). In an anticlimactic (and tragic, nonetheless) end-all, Alex told Rocky that it was, in fact, over and Lexie was right there (literally) to pick up the pieces and put her number into Alex’s phone. It looks like Lexie may have found the storyline opportunity of a lifetime. If she doesn’t take advantage of this, she may never get genuine airtime.
