Law Abiding Citizen really could have been a much better movie than it was. Gerard Butler is a capable actor and one of the flavors of the moment. Director F. Gary Gray helmed the excellent Italian Job remake, so the man clearly knows his way around an action movie. Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer is hit or miss, but even his mediocre scripts tend to be peppered with memorable touches like Equilibrium's "gun kata." Plus, the story itself is a revenge tale about one man's quest to exact vengeance on the men who killed his family and the corrupt system that let them get away with it. Everybody loves a good dose of cinematic vengeance!

What did we get? An uneven, far-fetched affair that still manages its share of entertaining moments, such as the sadistically meticulous nature of Clyde Shelton's (Butler) punishment of one of his family's killers. And then it gets to the ending. Without spoiling anything, the film's faults could likely have been redeemed with the right ending. Instead, apparently unsatisfied with being described as merely "far-fetched," Law Abiding Citizen shifts into gear and drives straight off the cliff of reason into the gorge of absurdity.

Today Anchor Bay Home Entertainment announced a release for Law Abiding Citizen that includes an unrated director's cut on the Blu-ray. Dare we hope that cut might include a somewhat less ridiculous ending? Fingers crossed, but we'll have to wait until February 16th to find out for sure. Here's the run-down:
