They say you can never keep a good game series down and, if the latest rumors are to be believed, that saying could apply to the lost but not forgotten Xbox series, Fable.
Over on Eurogamer, they're reporting on rumors that Microsoft has a new Fable game in the works. Their sources are folks supposedly close to the project, specifically the UK developer Playground, who is reportedly being tapped to tackle the project. If all of this is to be believed, however, it will probably still be quite a while before the new Fable game sees the light of day. Based on reports, the team is currently looking to stretch its staff into the triple digits before diving into development in earnest. Assuming all of this turns out to be true, we wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of a video reveal at, say, E3 2018, even if the game itself would likely be a couple of years off from launch.
Still, that's speculation based on unnamed sources, so it's probably best if we just stick to the most concrete information we have at this point.
For starters, those of you who recognize the studio likely enjoy the Forza games. They were most recently responsible for Forza Horizon 3 and, even though a Fable game would be a far cry from racing, it shows that the studio definitely knows how to make a beautiful, high-quality game.
The reason this is all still being treated as speculation is that Microsoft has offered the standard "we don't comment on speculation" statement when pressed about a possible Fable game moving into development.
Also worth noting is that this game will reportedly be more akin to the original Fable trilogy than the previously canned Fable Legends. The latter was developed as a free-to-play game that tasked a group of players with taking on dungeons set up and controlled by another player. The game seemed all but finished when Microsoft pulled the plug and shut down Lionhead studios. That makes this whole business a little frustrating, actually. It's known that Lionhead was eager to work on a standard Fable game after Fable Legends shipped, and then the studio was shuttered. Now, less than two years later, it looks like Microsoft has decided another Fable RPG would be a good idea, and they've handed the reigns off to a different studio.
Based on the report, Microsoft was spurred in this direction by the recent success of Sony's Horizon: Zero Dawn, and we've got to assume the insane hype for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has to be factored in there, too. With the genre doing so well, it makes sense Microsoft would want to re-enter the same arena with a fan-favorite series.
Our one concern is whether or not they're a bit too late to the party here. The Xbox One could certainly use some exclusives but, again, this new Fable is only just now getting rolling with development; and that's assuming the reports are accurate. For now, we'll just have to wait and see if Microsoft decides to make anything official.
