The Coalition may be knee deep in Gears of War games under the Microsoft publishing label, but it doesn't mean that the company is just churning out one sequel after another like the Transformers films. There's actually a bit of a unique surprise that came attached to the latest announcement during E3 to unveil Gears 5 for the Xbox One and Windows 10... specifically, that there's going to be more than just one Gears of War game coming to Microsoft's gaming platforms and there's going to be a little bit of something for everyone. However, traditional fans need not worry because Gears 5 is on the way.
The announcement for Gears of War 5 came during the Microsoft E3 press conference for the Xbox, and it was revealed with a first-look trailer containing cinematics and gameplay.
Things are a bit different -- no, scratch that. Things are a lot different this time around, as the main character has diverted away from the Fenix family and now focuses solely on the new character from Gears of War 4, Kait Diaz.
In the fourth chronological game, Diaz was J.D Fenix's girlfriend, and Marcus outfitted her with the power armor that his wife Anya wore.
Kait's mother was taken by the new breed of mutants roaming the planet and turned into part of their hive. At the end of the game, we learned that Kait is connected with the queen of the new Locust breed, and this is hinted at in the trailer above, where we see Kait ruminating on the necklace she's wearing.
Also, some major things have happened between Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. It appears as if J.D. Fenix has been through some serious hardships, as he's shaved his head and encountered a rather vicious and violent encounter that has left him scarred. Also, his right arm appears to be in some sort of protective device as it looks like it's either burned really badly or infected with something. I'm sure they'll explain what's going on with J.D., during the actual campaign mode.
The trailer starts with someone close to Kait dying, but we don't see who it is. She mentions that she has to go on an adventure and Marcus offers to go with her, but since the captain of the team is J.D., he tells them that they're due back at base. Del decides to go with Kait on her adventure, which takes her into a deep planet to uncover her connection to the Locusts.
Additionally, The Coalition also revealed that Gears of War: Pop is also on the way, which is a mobile game based on the Funko Pop toys. There's also a turn-based Gears of War game in the works called Gears of War: Tactics, but details are slim on the turn-based strategy game, which is mirrored after Firaxis' XCOM.
What we do know is that Gears 5 is set to come out at some point in 2019 for Windows 10 and Xbox One.
