You feel that calm settling in? It appears that after all of the Mario games, the Pokeemans and the latest Zelda offering, the deluge of winter game releases is finally settling down, resulting in a calm almost peaceful enough for us to actually sit back, relax and play all of those games that came out in recent weeks. In other words, other than some 3D Sega classics, not a heck of a lot is coming out on Nintendo consoles this week.
And I, for one, couldn't be happier. Despite the questionable tone of my opening remarks, I'm more than happy to have a few weeks go by when I don't feel utterly compelled to buy the latest and greatest games available on the 3DS and Wii U. I can finally enjoy some of those titles I picked up during the annual new game flood and maybe even play a little catch up on my backlog through the holidays.
This week isn't totally barren of new games, of course, it's just that those that are available aren't necessarily laser-focused on my particular demographic. But, perhaps, there's something here that you, dear reader, will enjoy.
First up, over on the 3DS, a duo of new Sega 3D classics are being made available starting this week, including 3D Sonic the Hedgehog and 3D Altered Beast. I might eventually pick up Sonic just to see what his first adventure looks like with that third dimension slapped on it but, at this point, that would be like my fourth version of the same game. The same goes for Altered Beast, which just so happens to be included on all of the Sega classic collection I own for other consoles. While pretty much anyone can still get some enjoyment out of a Sonic game these days, I would recommend Altered Beast only to those who have an extremely fond or nostalgic recollection of the game back in the day, or gaming history buffs who have heard it brought up in conversation a dozen times but have otherwise never had the opportunity to take the game for a spin. It's historically important, you could say, but that doesn't make it a very good game.
Donkey Kong 3 will also pop up on the 3DS Virtual Console this week, alongside new eShop games Brilliant Hamsters!, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Hooked on Bass Fishing. So, yeah, not exactly a lot of movers and shakers this week.
The Wii U is down to just one offering of any sort this week, and that is the NES classic The Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the home console's Virtual Console.
And finally, we can't forget about those discounts. This week's spotlighted character from the “Your favorite gaming friends” collection is the big gorilla himself, Donkey Kong. Visit the 3DS and Wii U eShops and Virtual Consoles through Dec. 12 to enjoy 30 percent off on games like the original Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., etc.
