Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment this morning made a couple of announcements for upcoming action game, Batman: Arkham Knight, including a season pass for post-launch content, as well as a Premium Edition of the game.
It seems like you can't launch a AAA game these days without also offering an upgraded version of said game, as well as promises of more content to be packed in once players have worked their way through the on-disc content. That holds true for Arkham Knight, the latest showdown for the Caped Crusader that's due in our grubby little mits come June 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Unfortunately, while we now know that Arkham Knight will be getting more content following launch, details for what said content includes are pretty vague. What's not vague, though, is the price point. Coming in at $39.99, Arkham Knight offers one of the most expensive season pass packages we've seen to date, which just so happens to be a mere 20 dollars cheaper than the actual game itself.
Coming from the team at Rocksteady Studios, this “epic conclusion” to the Arkham trilogy will also have a premium edition up for grabs, which includes the game itself and the season pass to boot. That can be yours for $99.99.
As for what that pricey package will include, here's the word from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment.
“The Batman: Arkham Knight season passwill deliver regular new content for six months post-launch including new story missions, additional super-villains invading Gotham City, legendary Batmobile skins, advanced challenge maps, alternate character skins, and new drivable race tracks,” reads the announcement. “The Batman: Arkham Knight Premium Edition includes the main game and the season pass.”
Both the premium edition and the season pass are, of course, already available for pre-order, too. So, once again, you're being asked to fork over a pretty sizable extra chunk of change for a list of planned content that's pretty lacking in detail. Whether or not those items listed above sound like $40 worth of value is entirely up to you. I'm sure said content will also be made available piece meal, too, for those of you who simply want, say, the mission packs but not the car/character skins.
I'm interested to hear what our readers think about this latest announcement for Arkham Knight. At this point, premium editions and a season pass are pretty much expected out of any big disc release, but that price keeps steadily creeping up. And while I don't doubt that Rockstead will make Arkham Knight feel like a full-fledged, experience, I can't help but feel uneasy about being asked to pay more money for little more than a rough outline of new content to come.
Then again, maybe players are A-OK with this and are more than happy to pay extra so long as it means something (anything) is coming down the pipeline for their favorite games.
