Yesterday CD Projekt RED teased gamers with an image of a cyber-punk setting for their next AAA RPG. Today, CD Projekt RED announced that a new team is being put together with former members from The Witcher 2, collaborating to work on Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk.
Pondsmith is best known as a pioneer in the cyber-punk RPG universe, giving gamers exciting tales like Cyberpunk, Cybergeneration and Mekton to name a few. CD Projekt's game will center around the universe of Cyberpunk, however, details on the actual gameplay, characterization and story were all sketchy to say the least. What was confirmed is that players will choose from being mercenaries or hackers and will be able to create their own character and build up a class using cybernetic implants and upgrades, ala Syndicate. The game will also sport morally ambiguous, mature decisions to help shape the cybernetic society.
Mike Pondsmith commented on the announcement while attending the live conference in Warsaw, Poland, saying...
“For over two decades, I’ve been proud to say that Cyberpunk’s been the gold standard of what it means to be a true cyberpunk game. And it’s been a huge success for me and our many fans, with over 5 million players worldwide. But over all that time we haven’t found the right team to bring our cyberpunk world to full digital life -- until now. CD Projekt Red is the team we’ve been hoping for.
I'm actually really glad that CD Projekt landed this kind of deal because it's rare for gamers to get a high quality cyber-punk sci-fi game. While Deus Ex: Human Revolution was awesome for what it was, it's not like before or after the game's release cyber-punk fans were treated with any other mainstream games from other companies to exemplify the genre.
Anyways, CD Projekt RED is hiring in a group of talented individuals for their brand new studio, and if you'd like to join the team and help make history, feel free to learn more by visiting the Official Website.
No release date or platform details were released for Cyberpunk but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.
