It’s not uncommon to find Easter eggs and references to other games hidden within new titles, but who would of thought that there would be a classic Super Mario Bros. level tucked away in Techland’s gritty zombie slay-a-thon, Dying Light?
At this point, it’s quite clear that the team working on Dying Light had a lot of fun doing their job. We reported earlier this year that a Destiny loot cave parody was discovered on the zombie-riddled streets of Harran and, since then, players have also discovered a hospital scene pulled directly from The Last of Us.
There’s no telling what will pop up next but, for the time being, it looks like the Techland team is fond of a certain Nintendo property starring a mustachioed plumber.
The latest Easter egg hidden within Dying Light that’s making its way around the internet is a clip showing off a certain green pipe that’s been tucked inside a chimney. Investigate the pipe and you’ll be whisked away to a magical realm where you have to tackle a Mario Bros-themed level that basically makes it look like you’re experiencing the 3D version of what players would see on a 2D screen. Obviously, it’s much easier to understand in video form.
Again, nothing mind-blowing, but a nice little surprise for those who like hunting down secrets and, let’s face it, those goo-enclosed zombies walking around the level are kind of terrifying in their own right. Unlike some of the other Easter eggs hidden throughout the game, however, the Mario level in >Dying Light offers a pretty rad bonus. If you grab the blueprints on offer in the hidden zone, you’ll be able to craft a “Pyza Suit.” In effect, it serves as a Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 (and beyond), allowing you to literally fly around the map without a care in the world.
Here’s my challenge to those of you out there playing the game: Go find the Mario level, get the suit, then team up with of Pyza Suit-wearing runners and fly around the city causing chaos. Finally, I need you to record the hilarity that will undoubtedly ensue and post it in the comments section below for our viewing pleasure.
Now go, and make internet magic.
