Just in case Sony’s own video store, Netflix, Hulu, Cracle and all of those other services available on the PlayStation 3 aren’t providing you with enough options for your marathon movie-watching sessions, yet another content provider is about to enter the ring: Epix.

Sony announced this morning that Epix will soon be made available on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, bringing its library of more than 3,000 movies, concerts, comedy specials and sports programming to your home console/handheld.

While some may roll their eyes at the thought of yet another video streaming service, this is exactly the kind of news I like to hear. The evolution of gaming consoles from dedicated playing devices to multimedia hubs is, to me, the single best thing to come out of this current generation. You don’t have to subscribe to any of these services but, if you do, you can now take advantage of them from a single location. What’s not to love about that?

Epix is actually first and foremost a premium movie channel. While PS3 and Vita users will be able to download the app for free, you must have a subscription in order to use its streaming services. But you can learn all about those options on the Epix website.

According to Sony, Epix will hit the PS3 sometime this quarter, followed by a launch on the Vita in the spring.
