Call of Duty games often get hammered for being shallow, Hollywood-style blockbuster shooting games. However, Treyarch over the years have crafted a rather remarkable and intricate story around their Black Ops games and they do a recap to help gamers catch up on the story ahead of the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for home consoles and PC.
The story recap clocks in at a massive 10 minutes. It covers everything from Black Ops 1 up through Black Ops 2. Check it out below.
The short version of Black Ops' story is that a patriotic soldier is brainwashed to do the bidding of an evil general but eventually, with the power of friendship and hardened resolve, manages to fight back against his oppressor. The only problem is that during all of this an anti-American cartel is rising in power looking to destabilize the country through subterfuge.
What's interesting is that in the YouTube description of the video Treyarch notes that the story actually stretches back much further than the Call of Duty: Black Ops games. In fact, they mention that the story is far more detailed, involving elements and characters from Call of Duty: World at War.
Even though Treyarch doesn't always get as much respect or attention as Infinity Ward did during the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 era of the series, it's commendable that over the past decade they've actually been crafting a story arch that has spanned multiple games and has characters and story elements that all tie in together.
Unfortunately, if you're new to Call of Duty: Black Ops the above video probably seems like information overload, and it's true that out of all the games Black Ops was probably the series closest to the Metal Gear Solid franchise when it came to winding stories and unpredictable outcomes. It was a story largely about brainwashing, conspiracies wrapped around assassination power-plays and advanced technology aimed at reshaping the world.
I have no idea how exactly Black Ops 3 directly ties into Black Ops 2, especially given that the newest game is a four-player cooperative shooter with an even larger focus on robotics, bionics and advanced augmentations. I'm sure the story will all come together after players finally get their hands on the title.
The YouTube comments are kind of funny because many of them don't really care about the detailed backstory to the main campaign or the characters involved... they just want more zombies!
In fact, there were quite a few people asking Treyarch for a zombie timeline in the Call of Duty series (excluding the exo-zombies of course). You can expect to experience the zombies in Black Ops 3 when the game goes live on November 6th for the home consoles and PC. You can learn more about the story and the zombies by visiting the official website.
