Capcom will be rolling out a brand new, free network service for Resident Evil 6 that will sport stat tracking, achievement sharing and smartphone support. The RE.Net service announcement isn't a standalone press release though, Capcom is killing two birds with one stone by also announcing that Resident Evil 6 has officially gone gold.

The “going gold” process indicates that a video game's development and design is 100% complete (or as complete as it needs to be in order to head to the manufacturing plants). This means that Capcom's teams are done and finished working on Resident Evil 6.

The press release doesn't bother wasting time talking about the going goldness of Resident Evil 6, though. It has a much more dedicated purpose in pushing for the RE.Net feature. Players will earn points just for logging into the service and features ranked tournaments and events, as well as the ability to compete or join friends on the action with casual playing options.

While on the outset this seems cool and I'm all down with the whole social aspect that Capcom is trying to tie together with the Resident Evil series, however some part of me has a strange feeling of skepticism about this. It may be that it's Capcom and I'm just trying to figure out what their angle or end-game is with a free network service. Maybe there's more to it than what it appears or perhaps it's a new form of DRM? Maybe it's nothing at all and it really is a benefit to the gaming community at large and my Pitchfork and Torch sense is just on high alert.

Hopefully RE.Net doesn't turn out like Ubisoft's Uplay, and it really will be to the benefit of gamers and RE fans alike. You can check out the full list of features for the ResidentEvil.Net below.
