Capcom confirmed today that Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is in development at SOCOM: Confrontation studio Slant Six Games. The squad-based shooter will be released this winter on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Raccoon City is set during the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Players take on the role of Umbrella Corporation commandos or U.S. special forces soldiers sent into the infested Raccoon City. Umbrella Corporation is looking to destroy all evidence that they caused the viral outbreak while the U.S. soldiers are trying to uncover the evidence. This means that your gameplay experience will be very different depending on what side you choose.

The game promises to revisit many of the old locations from RE2 and RE3 and reunite players with many of the old characters. You'll be experiencing the story from a new perspective, though, and you'll have a chance to alter the normal course of events. For example, the Umbrella Security Services will get a chance to hunt down and kill Leon Kennedy.

The campaign will be playable alone or with three other people online. A number of competitive multiplayer modes will be included as well. In these competitive modes, both factions will battle each other as well as zombies.

Full previews for the game will be running in upcoming issues of PlayStation: The Official Magazine and the Official Xbox Magazine. The cover art for each magazine is below.
