Tomb Raider PS4, Xbox One Versions Launching In 2014

Square Enix is bringing Tomb Raider to Xbox One and PS4. The Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider will come to stores in January 2014 with additional content.

The next-gen versions of Tomb Raider were first outed last month by listings on Amazon Italy. Amazon in North America followed suit today, providing concrete details on the bundle as well as the preliminary box art.

The website for Spike VGX says that there's going to be a special Tomb Raider announcement during the show tonight. I guess Square Enix had been hoping to keep the Definitive Edition under wraps until then. Maybe they've got something else up their sleeves, though, such as next-gen footage of Tomb Raider. It was a purty game on Xbox 360 and PS3 so I'd love to see what newer machines can do with the game.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has been "re-built specifically for next-gen consoles," according to the Amazon listing. Lara's been remade with "obsessive detail." The island of Yamatai has been refurbished as well. The new consoles apparently give the developers the ability to throw new weather effects at players. Next-gen rainstorms for the win.

Square Enix also threw in a bunch of DLC released for Tomb Raider as well. It's not exactly "free" - the Definitive Edition costs $60, or twice what the current versions of Tomb Raider cost. Amazon mentions the Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, six bonus outfits for Lara, a digital mini art book, and a digital comic. Those were all pre-order bonuses for the current-gen versions, if memory serves.

There's no word on whether this bundle also includes the three multiplayer map packs released after the game's debut on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. They really ought to just include those in the bundle as well; the multiplayer was far from the star of that show so it could use the bonus content.

The Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider will hit stores on January 28th, 2014. If you pre-order, you'll receive a bonus artbook with exclusive concept art from the game's development.

Update: And now they announced it. Here's the trailer:
