The reboot of the Tomb Raider series is all about survival. Lara Croft is shipwrecked on a dangerous island and needs to rely on her wits and resourcefulness in order to stay alive. A new video series from Crystal Dynamics will show how she comes into her own in her first adventure.

Lara will earn experience points by completing missions, defeating enemies and exploring the island. She can then spend these points at her base camp in order to upgrade her skills. Through this progression system, she'll unlock new abilities for traversing the island and fighting any hostile animals or people she encounters.

One core ability that Lara possesses is called Survival Instinct. This ability is sort of like Eagle Vision in Assassin's Creed or Detective Mode in Arkham Asylum. It allows Lara to easily see key parts of puzzles, or locate hidden treasures.

Lara can also upgrade her equipment at base camp. One example cited in this first trailer is her climbing axe. At first, she has a makeshift axe that's only good for smashing open boxes or prying open doors. However, by collecting scrap, she'll be able to build a more sophisticated axe for riding ziplines and puncturing enemies' skulls.

The next episode of this survival series will talk about how Lara uses her tools to travel across the dangerous terrain of the island.
