As great as Jennifer Lawrence's performance was in Silver Linings Playbook, I kind of thought Bradley Cooper was robbed in not winning his own Academy Award for his lead role in the film. Looking at the trailer for American Hustle, it seems both actors are bringing their Oscar-worthy talent back to the big screen for another David O. Russell movie. Or maybe it's just the sight of Cooper delivering what appears to be an intense, low-spoken monologue while his hair is tightly rolled in curlers that has me intrigued. The trailer doesn't exactly spell out the movie's plot, but it does tease a number of what could prove to be award-worthy performances from its excellent cast, as well as a myriad of impressive hair situations.
The cast looks good and there's a hint of suspense, violence and a little bit of humor, not to mention the potential for a pretty great soundtrack to go with American Hustle, but what's it about? The trailer, which comes courtesy of Yahoo is vague on that, so here's the description, which lays out the plot and offers a detail or two about the roles played by Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner.
A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation,American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.
Promotions for the film have been playing up the retro-glam of the era, including a set of sparkly new character posters that celebrate wide lapels and sideburns for the men, and some big hair and plunging necklines for the ladies. Fashion is one more thing to add to this film's potential appeal, though we'll have to wait and see how the finished product looks when American Hustle arrives in theaters December 13.
