Chris Pine is the face behind two franchises. Back in 2009 fans were amazed as the actor became both Captain Kirk and Jack Ryan in one fell swoop and established himself on top of the A-list. And then...nothing. Though the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek was a global success, the folks behind the scenes have been somewhat dragging their heels to get a sequel into production and, funny enough, the next Jack Ryan movie has been delayed so that Pine can focus on just being Kirk. But just because he's not busy being a franchise star doesn't mean that he's not busy. The actor currently has two films - This Means War and Welcome To People - in the can waiting to be released and has just added another smaller project.

Reporting out of Cannes, the LA Times says that Pine is now in talks to star in Mud for director Jeff Nichols. The film, described as being in the vein of Stand By Me, is about two boys who meet a fugitive named Mud (who would be played by Pine) and help him escape. Nichols recently directed Take Shelter which got a fair share of buzz at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Producer Aaron Ryder would not comment on the Pine casting.

Pine seemingly became a blockbuster star even before he could become a leading man, so it will be interesting to see what he can do with a more subtle project like this one and thanks to Take Shelter there are a lot of eyes on Nichols as well. It could be the perfect pairing.
