With all of the information that flies through the internet on a daily basis, and the number of people looking for new and exciting information about the latest blockbusters, it’s amazing that any film can stay under the radar. At this point you probably know all there is to know about Comancheria, right? Yeah, we missed that one, too, but it’s in production right now and it's put together one hell of a cast. Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges, and Ben Foster on all on board for the upcoming heist film.
Screen Daily has the brief mention of the movie buried amongst several others that have reached deals for Swiss distribution (seriously, the places you find news). The film is directed by David MacKenzie, whose previous work, the prison drama Starred Up, we were big fans of. It was also written by Sons of Anarchy’s Taylor Sheridan. Comancheria is the story of two brothers, played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster, who plan a bank robbery in order to save their family farm. Jeff Bridges plays the Texas Ranger sent after them. While the premise feels like one we’ve seen before, it’s possible we’ve never seen a cast like this do it before.
The media focus on Chris Pine has been so taken with the currently filming Star Trek: Beyond and his recently announced signing to play Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman movie that this one seems to have slipped right by everyone. It’s curious as well, because it looks like both Comancheria and Star Trek are currently in production, which means Pine must be working pretty hard in order to get both of these films done.
Jeff Bridges as a Texas Ranger sounds like something we’ve seen a hundred times before, although there’s no indication that this movie actually is the old west period piece it sounds like. Texas Rangers are modern lawmen too, after all. Either way, it’s been awhile since we've seen Bridges in anything good. His recent career has been focused on under-performing young adult fantasy stuff and this sounds like just the sort of thing he can be great in.
Ben Foster has not become the same household name that Pine and Bridges have, but he has put together a strong, diverse resume nonetheless. You’ve seen him in Lone Survivor and 3:10 to Yuma. You probably also saw him in X-Men: The Last Stand, but we can pretend you didn’t. His next major role is in the upcoming Warcraft film.
While there’s a lot we still don’t know about Comancheria, the cast and director are enough to get us really excited. Hopefully we’ll learn more soon. There is no release date yet.
