As one of the world's biggest movie stars (both literally and figuratively), Dwayne Johnson is just about everywhere you look in movies nowadays - and soon he will be slipping into the world of animation as well. It has been revealed that the Pain & Gain star is the first actor to be in negotiations for Moana, the latest project put into development by the folks over at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The project was first announced back in October, and while there aren't very many details about the plot currently availabele, The Wrap has the scoop on who Dwayne Johnson is in talks to play. According to the site's sources, Disney is looking at the star to play Maui, described as "a demi-god who aids a young girl on a nautical adventure." It's this young girl who is featured in the first concept art that was released for the movie:
Set in "ancient South Pacific world of Oceania," Moana follows the titular character as she heads out to sea in search of a fabled island, aided by the help of Maui. The movie is expected to be packed with action and fantasy, featuring sea monsters and elements from regional folklore. It should be noted that Dwayne Johnson isn't officially locked in at this point, and the source notes that the search is still on for an actress to provide the voice of Moana. The film isn't scheduled to come to theaters until late in 2016, so it may actually be a little while until any official announcements about the project are made by Disney.
The good news for Dwayne Johnson fans is that they won't have to wait anywhere close to two more years to see more of the actor on the big screen. The wrestler-turned-actor has a big 2015 planned with two movies that should be pretty significant blockbusters. First, in April we will finally see the release of James Wan's Furious 7, which will see Johnson teaming with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and the rest of the Fast gang for the third time. In May of next year he will be headlining San Andreas, an original disaster movie that will see the star playing a rescue pilot who travels across the state of California during a massive earthquake in order to save his daughter. Also on Johnson's radar is the upcoming Baywatch movie and DC Comics' Shazam (in which he will be playing Black Adam).
