When I was in middle school my teachers would encourage me to always "write what I know." I, of course, always ignored this piece of advice in favor of stories about aliens and polar bear attacks, but writer/director David Ayer has made a career of the idea. Since 2001, when Ayer won acclaim for his gritty cop drama Training Day, all of the filmmakers movies have dealt with the police. In the last decade, Ayer has written and/or directed Dark Blue, S.W.A.T., Harsh Times and Street Kings. This year he is arriving with End of Watch, a new gritty cop drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena, and today delivers our first look at the film.

Check out the trailer below.

The film follows Officers Taylor and Zavala, two of the best police officers in South Central California. One day they pull someone over and after they manage to survive an attack, they find incredibly powerful weaponry and jewelery. But when they begin to look into the source of their treasure, they suddenly find themselves in deep trouble with the cartels. End of Watch, written and directed by Ayer, also stars Anna Kendrick, Cody Horn, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo and Natalie Martinez. Look for it when it opens September 28th and you can read more about it in our Blend Film Database.
