High School Musical 3 Headed For Box Office Number 1

This should come as no surprise to anyone, but it’s starting to look like High School Musical 3: Senior Year will be number one at the box office next weekend. Disney’s cash cow doesn’t hit theaters until Friday, but tickets are already selling at an alarming rate in pre-sales.

Movietickets.com is reporting that HSM 3 ticket pre-sales currently account for 81% of the tickets sold on their website, and the rate at which they’re selling is still increasing. This Sunday they pre-sold four times as many HSM 3 tickets as they did last Sunday. Tickets are selling so fast, that it’s already on the verge of breaking into the top 20 biggest movie ticket pre-sellers of all time. Remember, it’s only Monday.

What’s more, there’s really no competition to speak of this weekend. Pride & Glory is barely being advertised and will almost certainly be dead on arrival. Saw V arrives on Friday and while normally the new entry in the Saw franchise might have some box office power, for some reason they’ve decided to release this latest entry the week before Halloween. At least part of the audience interested in seeing it is likely to wait until next week, leaving HSM 3 a wide open road to the top.

Expect sold out showings before the week is out, and unless you love teenagers (and let’s face it, even teenagers don’t like teenagers), consider staying home this weekend, curled up with a good DVD.
