Jon Favreau Says Iron Man 3 Will Be A Sequel To Thor, Captain America And The Avengers

At this stage in the game, the chronology of the Marvel movie universe is a bit wacked: the events of Iron Man happen way before The Incredible Hulk; The Incredible Hulk is at the same time as Iron Man 2; Thor takes place after Iron Man 2; and Captain America: The First Avenger takes place 50 years before the events of any of the other films. The Avengers will be the one to finally put all of the characters on the same timeline. Naturally, we can expect that all of the Marvel films that follow the 2012 team-up movie will have to share continuity. Now director Jon Favreau has confirmed it.

Speaking with MTV, Favreau has explicitly said that the events of Iron Man 3, which is currently slated for a May 3, 2013 release date, will serve as a sequel-of-sorts to Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. Because of that, though, the director doesn't really know at this stage where the second shellhead sequel will go, simply because he doesn't know too much about the other films.

The idea is somewhat of a continuation from comments made by Favreau back in May when he said that the Mandarin would be the film's central villain, but that he wasn't sure how he would be able to present the character in a world that includes the likes of the Norse god and Cap.

I must say Favreau not having any inklings about what's going on in the Marvel movie universe is a bit troubling. If they really want to create something solid here, the studio needs to have all of its creative minds on board. A perfect example of this was when Marvel brought in Joss Whedon to do rewrites of the Captain America script. While I know that neither of next summer's films are 100% completed yet, Marvel needs to sit down everyone involved with their films and have a meeting about what's going on. Otherwise they are looking at a giant clusterfuck.
