Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire And Amanda Seyfried For The Great Gatsby?

UPDATE: Baz Luhrmann told MTV on Wednesday that he is indeed still working on his Gatsby adaptation, but wouldn't confirm any casting rumors or even if it will be his next project. Still, it seems pretty safe to assume these rumored names are coming from the Luhrmann project. Stay tuned.

It's fair to assume that every studio and director and screenwriter, at one point or another, has harbored fantasies of adapting The Great Gatsby to the screen. The 1974 attempt was merely OK, but that wasn't enough to convince people that F. Scott Fitzgerald's Great American Novel probably ought to be left on the page where it truly belongs. As of December 2008 Baz Luhrmann was going to try his hand at an adaptation, and now the project has popped up again in the form of a very, very vague rumor.

Here's the entirety of a tweet from Production Weekly-- a source with an impeccable track record, it should be noted:

Rumored casting for The Great Gatsby, Leonardo DiCaprio for Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire for Nick Carraway & Amanda Seyfried for Daisy Buchanan

That's it. No mention of who's producing or directing or writing or even where this rumor is coming from-- you'd think they could have ditched the characters' last names and provided us with that info. I'm inclined not to take this too seriously, not because Production Weekly isn't a good source, but we have no idea what this rumor means or how likely this cast would be to come together. Chime in in the comments on how appropriate any of these people are for their respective parts; I'm choosing to pretend no one will ever adapt the story again and they'll leave poor Gatsby alone with his green light once and for all.
