With the uber success of both Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers franchise, we’ve been left wondering if the two will ever join forces. There has been speculation, but nothing of substance to really wrap our heads around. Until now. It may only be a rumor, but it could make a ton of sense if true. Apparently, Avengers: Age of Ultron may be introducing a mysterious female character named Mantis, who has connections with the Guardians.
The scoop came from Schmoesknow, who claim to have a source with intimate details of Marvel’s plans. If Marvel does want to connect the two universes though, this character could easily serve that purpose. And with Infinity stones coming from all sides of the spectrum, bringing the two teams together for Infinity War seems quite necessary.
Last year, Joss Whedon was interviewed at the Guardians of the Galaxy London premiere and discussed his Avengers sequal with HeyUGuys. In it he revealed that there were going to be four prominent female roles at the center of the film. We already knew that Scarlet Witch and Black Widow would be making an appearance. We also know that Maria Hill and Peggy Carter are cast in the film, but we aren’t sure their significance. And in the latest trailer for Age of Ultron we saw a mysterious woman disrobing in a cave. So if there is another prominent female character, we haven’t met her quite yet. And Mantis would be an interesting addition.
In the comics, Mantis fits in the Avengers universe by ties with Vision, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but she also has worked with the Guardians of the Galaxy before, and has ties to Thanos. But, Schmoesknow admits that this is not a certainty, and as much as it would be incredibly awesome to see the two worlds collide, it is best to take this information with a grain of salt.
And on the side of speculation, we are left wondering if such a minor character is absolutely necessary to bring the two teams together. When Guardians of the Galaxy broke box office records last year, the idea of a crossover event which would bring the two teams together against Thanos, made a lot of sense. And already there are the Infinity Stones connecting the two universes. But could one minor role be the jumping point to a face-to-face meeting?
We’ll have to wait and see what new characters take the screen when Avengers: Age of Ultron hits screens May 1, 2015. And whether or not there will be any connecting factor to Guardians for the Infinity War which begins May 4, 2018.
