There’s no doubt that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the busiest people in Hollywood. It feels like every other week he’s announcing work on a new project like making another Jumanji or Big Trouble in Little China. His list of upcoming projects is seriously huge, but maybe the most anticipated is his return as Hobbs in Fast 8. Johnson brought a lot of energy back into the Fast and Furious franchise with his take no prisoners government bounty hunting badass, and it looks like his character Hobbs will be turning the dial up to 11 for Fast 8.

Dwayne Johnson has shared the first image and details about Hobbs’ role in the film on his Instagram account (The Rock’s go to for social media reveals).

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: #HOBBS #F8 When you strip a man of all he has. All that's important to him. You force him to return to his roots.. and sometimes that's a very dangerous and twisted place. If I was going to return for another FAST & FURIOUS I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs and his "Daddy's gotta go to work" mentality and set the table in a cool way for where the character goes in the future. Maybe it's a spinoff movie. Maybe it's more #FF movies. Or hell maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again. Either way, I've had a solid first week of shooting, good to be back with the ohana, good to work again w/ my bud and director F. Gary Gray and our home studio of UNIVERSAL, as always have been the best partners to me and my #SevenBucksProds team. Most importantly... you guys around the world will really dig this new version of the role, 'cause as we always say, disrupters dent the universe. #Hobbs #TwistedRoots #1Disrupter #1Savage #F8

If you thought Hobbs was cool before, then this movie is kicking him into overdrive. That is a guy you do not want to mess with. We’re used to only seeing Hobbs in his tactical gear, but it looks like he’s hit some hard times; a man doesn’t grow a pointy beard like that if everything is going swimmingly. As Johnson explains in his post, Hobbs has had everything important to him stripped away and he’ll return to his dark and twisted roots. This is in line with everything we know about Charlize Theron’s villain Cipher, who is said to test the crew like never before. We don’t really know much about Hobbs other than his job and that he has a daughter, but it looks like he’ll be losing one or both during Fast 8.
Another interesting part of the post is where Dwayne Johnson says this will take Hobbs. We could be learning a lot more about Hobbs in Fast 8, and it could set up his rumored spin-off film. It seems that the ending to Fast 8 will leave the door open for multiple options for both The Rock and Hobbs. Personally, I’d be down for a Hobbs spinoff, but I’m more excited to see The Rock in other projects like Doc Savage or Disney’s Jungle Cruise.
Fast 8 is directed by F. Gary Gray and will focus on the crew running afoul of a new master villain who promises to be a challenge like they’ve never faced before. It stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. Fast 8 is scheduled to hit theaters next year on April 14, 2017.
